In some cases, steroids can be used to treat allergic reactions. Prednisone is a corticosteroid, a medication similar to cortisone or steroid, that works on the immune system to help reduce swelling, redness, itching, and other allergic reactions. Prednisone is used to treat a variety of conditions, such as inflammation, severe allergies, adrenal problems, arthritis, asthma, blood or bone marrow problems, endocrine problems, eye or vision problems, stomach or intestinal problems, lupus, skin conditions, renal diseases, ulcerative colitis and outbreaks of multiple sclerosis. Nasal corticosteroids are also available to relieve congestion.
Unlike over-the-counter nasal sprays, nasal corticosteroids are not addictive and can be used without your body getting used to them. However, it can take up to three weeks before you start to feel the full benefits.
